Recentemente mi è capitato diverse volte di parlare di giochi di ruolo dal vivo (noti anche come gdr live, o larp in inglese) con amici totalmente estranei a tale ambiente, e ho notato che molti di loro sono incuriositi e vorrebbero prima o poi provarne uno, ma ciò che più li preoccupa e li trattiene dal farlo è il costo elevato dei costumi.
Ora, io non mi considero una grandissima esperta nel campo, ma con un anno e mezzo di gioco in varie associazioni e quattro personaggi diversi alle spalle, credo di aver imparato almeno qualche trucchetto del mestiere per la realizzazione di un costume, perciò ho deciso di scrivere questa mini guida per aiutare gli aspiranti larpers poveri in canna come me XD (sto valutando se iniziare da qui una nuova rubrica dedicata al mondo larp e alla creazione di costumi e oggetti di scena, vi piacerebbe?), oggi in particolare parlerò di come mettere insieme un buon costume femminile in stile fantasy/medioevale con un budget ridotto.

to try sooner or later , but their biggest worry that stops them from doing so is the high cost of the costumes .Now,
I do not consider myself a great expert in this field , but after a year
and a half of playing in various associations and four different characters, I think I've learned at least a few tricks for
the creation of a costume, so I decided to write
this short guide to help penniless aspiring LARPers like me XD (I'm
considering to start a new section here, dedicated to the creation of LARP costumes and props , would you be interested in reading it?) , today in
particular, I will discuss how put together a good fantasy/medieval female costume on a budget.

Bollaverde, Zafirah Al-Nayyr, nobile fahariana; il costume l'ho creato in una decina di giorni con un budget ridottissimo:
Abito, pantaloni: mercatino dell'usato;
"Sari" (in realtà è un pareo), cintura borchiata, spada e bracciali in cuoio: prestati da amici e parenti;
Bracciale a serpente, cintura bianca con monetine: mercato di Porta Palazzo, Torino;
Diadema con velo: fatto da me, in realtà è una collana modificata con attaccato un rettangolo di stoffa ricavato da una tendina XD
For example, in the grainy pic above (I'm still waiting for the official photo set of the event) you can see my new character for Bollaverde LARP, Zafirah Al-Nayyr, Faharian noblewoman; I created this costume in about 10 days with a very low bodget:
Dress, pants: flea market;
"Sari" (actually it's a beach sarong), studded belt, sword and leather cuffs: borrowed from friends and relatives;
Snake bracelet, white coin belt: Porta Palazzo market, Turin;
Headpiece ith veil: handmade by me, actually it's a modified necklace with a piece of curtain fabric attached XD
La prima cosa da fare una volta scelto il personaggio che volete interpretare, è cercare di immaginare come si veste, tenendo anche conto delle sue abilità e mansioni: se siete una nobildonna di alto lignaggio potete andarci giù pesante con gioielli e tessuti raffinati, mentre se siete una guerriera errante forse è meglio preferire abiti più comodi e sobri.
Una volta deciso quale sarà più o meno il vostro look, il primo passo è quello di cercare "pezzi" utili fra ciò che avete già in casa, oppure chiedere ad amici e parenti se possono prestarvi qualcosa: anche oggetti e abiti comunissimi possono tornare utili con qualche piccola modifica.
Se dopo questa fase avrete ancora bisogno di qualcosa, le due vie più economiche sono i mercatini dell'usato e il fai da tè. Se sapete cucire siete già a metà dell'opera, poichè vi basta trovare scampoli di stoffa economici, oppure riutilizzare in modo creativo tende e lenzuola trovate in casa, per creare l'abito dei vostri sogni; se invece il cucito non fa per voi c'è sempre la via dell'usato: la varietà di abiti e oggetti di cui la gente vuole disfarsi per pochi euro è incredibile e con un pò di fortuna troverete sicuramente qualcosa di utile.
Nel caso non riusciste proprio a trovare tutto ciò che vi serve, oltre al classico ebay, ci sono molti siti specializzati in abbigliamento e attrezzature varie da larp, però c'è il forte rischio di superare il vostro budget, oppure che il vostro ordine non arrivi in tempo. In ogni caso se proprio dovete servirvi del web, vi consiglio
Mytholon che ha un buon rapporto qualità/prezzo e spedisce piuttosto rapidamente.
Queste erano alcune linee guida generiche per procurarsi abiti e accessori a buon prezzo, ora vorrei parlare di alcuni capi che, secondo la mia esperienza, sono assolutamente necessari per ogni tipo di costume:
- Stivali. Durante gli eventi larp ci si muove molto, si cammina, corre, combatte, dunque è fondamentale avere delle calzature comode che non provochino vesciche e vi tengano i piedi caldi in inverno. L'ideale sarebbe un bel paio di stivali impermeabili e con suola antiscivolo; mi sento di consigliarli anche d'estate perchè pur tenendo molto caldo, gli stivali permettono di camminare su ogni tipo di terreno senza scivolare o graffiarsi con la vegetazione.
Fortunatamente non è difficile (soprattutto per noi ragazze) trovare dei modelli, anche economici, che si adattino a costumi storici o fantasy, in linea di massima il classico stivale con risvolto "piratesco" va bene con quasi tutto, qui sotto potete vederne alcuni esempi:
The
first thing to do once you've choosen the character you want to play , is trying to imagine how she dresses, also considering her skills and
tasks : if you are a noble lady you can
use a lot of jewelry and fine fabrics, while if you are a wandering warrior perhaps it is better to prefer more comfortable and sober clothes.Once
you have decided what will be, more or less, your look , the first step
is to look for useful items among what you already have at home, or ask friends and relatives if they can lend you something : even
the commonest objects and clothes can come in handy with some minor modifications .After this step, if you still need something , the cheapest ways are flea markets and DIY . If
you can sew, you're halfway done, as you just have to find cheap fabric scraps, or reuse in a creative way curtains and bed sheets found in the
house, to create the dress of your dreams; instead if sewing is not for
you, you can check flea markets and charity shops: the variety of clothes and objects that
people wants to get rid of for a few euros is amazing and with a little luck
you will surely find something useful.If
you still haven't found everything you need, in addition to ebay , there are many websites specialized in LARP clothing and
equipment, though there is the risk of exceeding
your budget, or that your order does not arrive
on time. Anyway if you have to shop online, I recommend
you Mytholon that has a good quality/price ratio and ships rather
quickly.
These
were just some general guidelines to find clothes and accessories at a
good price, now I want to talk about some items which, in my
experience, are absolutely necessary for every kind of costume :- Boots. During LARP events you move a lot: you walk, run, fight... so it's very
important to have comfortable shoes that don't cause blisters and
keep your feet warm in winter. The
ideal would be a nice pair of waterproof boots with non-slip soles, they're the best even in summer because they allow you to walk on any terrain without slipping or scratching
your leg with vegetation .Fortunately
it is not difficult (especially for us girls ) to find cheap boots, that could fit with historical or fantasy costumes: for example the classic "pirate" boot with a cuff or fold on the upper part goes well with almost
everything. Below you can see some examples :
- Mantello. Altro capo fondamentale in qualsiasi stagione (l'ho usato anche ad agosto, giuro) è un buon mantello con cappuccio, fatto con una stoffa calda e semi impermeabile (tessuti naturali come lana, lana cotta, loden o qualcosa del genere sono l'ideale, per favore evitate come la peste cose come viscosa, raso e simili). Sui internet se ne trovano di diversi stili, colori e materiali, ma se volete risparmiare il modo migliore è cucirlo da sè: il mantello a mezza ruota è un capo facilissimo e veloce da realizzare anche per chi non si intende troppo di cucito (come me ^^), potete utilizzare uno dei numerosi tutorial che si trovano sul web come
questo.
- Borsa/scarsella. Durante gli eventi non è possibile tornare alla macchina o alla tenda ogni cinque minuti per recuperare cellulare/soldi/fazzoletti/torcia/etc... perciò è bene avere sempre con sè un piccolo contenitore per portare sia gli oggetti di gioco, che i vostri averi nel mondo reale. In termini di comodità l'ideale è una scarsella da attaccare alla cintura, ma anche una tracolla o uno zainetto possono andare. Come materiali vale sempre la regola dei tessuti naturali: tela, cuoio o pelle vanno benissimo. Ecco qualche esempio di borse e zaini adattabili ad un costume larp:
- Cloak. Another fundamental item in any season (I used it even in August, really) is a good
hooded cloak , made with a warm semi waterproof fabric (natural materials such as wool, felt, loden or something similar are the best, please avoid things like viscose, satin, etc.) . On
the net you can find cloak in a lot of different styles, colors and materials, but
if you want to save some moneyit is better to sew one yourself: an half circle cloak is very easy and quick to sew, even for beginner seamstresses (like me ^ ^), you can use one of the many online tutorials like this.
- Bag/belt pouch. During an event, you can not return to the car or the tent every five
minutes to recover your phone/money/handkerchief/torch/etc... so it is good to keep always with you a small container to bring both game objects and your real world belongings. In terms of comfort, the ideal is a pouch attached to your belt, but also a shoulder bag or a backpack can go. Follow again the rule of natural materials: canvas, leather or suede should be fine. Here are some examples of bags and backpacks suitable for a LARP costume:
Una volta trovati questi tre capi fondamentali, il resto del costume sta alla vostra fantasia, come dicevo prima, è possibile mettere assieme un buon costume anche utilizzando capi di facile reperibilità come negli esempi qui sotto: con Polyvore mi sono divertita a creare due costumi completi utilizzando quasi esclusivamente abiti e accessori "normali" (ad eccezione del mantello e del diadema), che ve ne pare?
Once you have gathered these three "key" items, the rest of the costume is up to your imagination, as I said before, with a little effort you can put together a good costume using only items that are easy to find, as in the examples below: I had fun with Polyvore in creating two complete costumes using almost only "normal" clothes and accessories (except for the ncloak and tiara), what do you think?
Per quanto riguarda le armi, se è il vostro primo larp vi consiglio caldamente di farvi prestare qualcosa da un amico o noleggiarle (molte associazioni offrono questo servizio a prezzi di solito molto bassi), creare un'arma da larp non è difficilissimo ma richiede un pò di pratica, tempo e, soprattutto, diversi materiali non sempre economici, quindi prima di mettervi all'opera, è meglio aspettare e vedere se questo fantastico mondo vi piace e intendete continuare :)
Regarding weapons, if it is your first LARP event, I strongly suggest you borrow something from a friend or rent them (many associations usually offer this service for very low prices), creating LARP weapons is not difficult, but requires a little practice, time and, above all, various materials that are not always cheap so, before you start, it is better to wait and see if you like this amazing world and intend to continue :)
