E' con grande piacere che voglio presentarvi il motivo della mia recente latitanza sul blog, ovvero il nuovo negozio Etsy: Dressy Dinosaur!

Ho deciso di unire nel negozio due mie grandi passioni: il vintage e i costumi (storici e da larp), infatti lo sto piano piano riempiendo sia con capi vintage a partire dagli anni '40, sia con mie creazioni originali (come il completo 1860 che vedete qui sotto). 

For this shop I decided to combine two of my greatest passions: vintage clothes and costumes (both historical and LARP), in fact I am slowly filling it with vintage pieces from the 40's onwards and with my own original creations (such as the 1860 set you can see below).

Nella creazione del negozio devo assolutamente ringraziare Dani e i miei amici che da tempo mi spingevano in questa direzione, mia suocera che mi ha dato un sacco di indirizzi utili dove trovare stoffe e materiali (e mi sta facendo pubblicità sfrenata con tutte le sue conoscenze ^^) e Lisa di Black Rabbit Hole, che mi ha dato diverse dritte e consigli sul mondo di Etsy.

In creating the store I really have to thank Dani and my friends who have long pushed me in this direction, my mother-in-law who gave me a lot of useful addresses for fabrics and materials (and she's advertising me like crazy with all her acquaintances^^ ) and Lisa of  Black Rabbit Hole, which gave me several tips and advices on the world of Etsy.

Sewing Adventures: 1860 blue taffetà ball gown

Finalmente, dopo chilometri di orli cuciti a mano e costumi finiti all'ultimo minuto, qualche mese fa ho rimpiazzato la vecchia macchina da cucire rotta con una Singer tradition 2259, perfettamente funzionante e facile da usare  (regalo di compleanno dei miei amici :) ). Oggi, dopo un lungo periodo di silenzio voglio inaugurare questa nuova rubrica dedicata alle mie creazioni sartoriali raccontandovi del primo (e un pò folle) progetto che ho realizzato con la nuova macchina.

Ho sempre amato la moda del periodo vittoriano, così quando un'amico a gennaio mi ha invitata al galà Oceans of Time, organizzato da Old Souls, un gruppo che organizza pic nic ed eventi in costume in Lombardia, non ho avuto dubbi nel scegliere lo stile del mio abito (il dresscode dell'evento consentiva abiti dall'anno 1000 al 1900).
La mia prima idea era di realizzare un abito da presentazione a corte in blu e oro, ispirato a questa meraviglia:

Finally, after kilometers of handsewn hems and costumes finished at the very last minute,some months ago I replaced my old and broken sewing machine with a shiny new Singer Tradition 2259, perfectly working and easy to use (birthday present from my friends :) ). Today, after a long hiatus, I want to introduce this new column dedicated to my sartorial creations, talking about the first (and a bit crazy) project I  created using the new sewing machine.

I always loved victorian fashion, so when in January a friend invited me to Oceans of Time, a gala held by Old Souls, a Lombardy located group that organizes costume pic nics and events, I had no doubt in choosing the style of my dress (the dress code of the event allowed clothing from 1000 to 1900).
My first idea was to create a blue and golden court presentation dress, inspired by this wonder:

ma ben presto mi sono resa conto di quanto sia scomodo un simile strascico per ballare e soprattutto di come sia impossibile reperire decori in pizzo dorato decenti in grande quantità e buon prezzo (ricamare a mano l'intero abito era fuori discussione per questioni di tempo e sanità mentale -.-),così ho dovuto rivedere i miei piani.

Grazie a un colpo di fortuna e all'occhio di falco di una mia amica (Lisa di Black Rabbit Hole), ho trovato del bellissimo taffetà cangiante blu notte al mercato ad un prezzo molto economico (4euro al metro contro i 16 dei negozi di tessuti) e una gran quantità di pizzi e passamanerie a prezzi stracciati al Balon, tra cui 8,5m di pizzo veneziano artigianale di cotone bianco e altrettanti metri di passamaneria a treccia argentata perfetti per il mio abito!

but soon I realized how uncomfortable must be such a train for dancing and above all how it is impossible to find a big quantity of nice golden lace decors at good price (hand embroider the whole dress was out of question for lack of time and to preserve my mental health -.-),so I had to change my plans.
Thanks to a fluke and an hawk-eyed friend (Lisa of Black Rabbit Hole), I found some beautiful night blue iridescent taffeta for a very good price at the market (4euros per meter, compared to 16euros per meter of fabric stores) and a lot of lace and trimmings at bargain prices at Balon, including 8,5m of white cotton handmade Venetian lace and the same lenght of silver braided trim perfect for my dress!

Nel frattempo mi era già arrivata l'enorme crinolina a 8 strati di tulle che avevo ordinato da Ebay approfittando di un buono sconto, per questo tipo di abiti sarebbe più indicata una crinolina a cerchi, ma ho preferito questa per stare più comoda ed evitare l'effetto paralume ^^

Meanwhile I received the huge 8 layer petticoat I ordered with a coupon on Ebay, for this kind of dresses it's usually better to use a hoop petticoat, but I preferred this one for comfort and to avoid the lampshade effect. 

Raccolti tutti i materiali necessari mi sono subito messa all'opera: la gonna è stata la parte più facile perché ne avevo già realizzata una simile per Sogno di una notte di fine inverno, il corpetto invece mi ha messa un pò in difficoltà: ne ho dovuti imbastire due di prova (realizzati con delle vecchie lenzuola) prima di riuscire ad aggiustare il cartamodello alle mie misure (l'ho disegnato a mano a partire da questo) e non credo ci sarei riuscita senza i preziosi consigli di alcune amiche sarte più esperte di me.
Una volta terminata la "base" in taffetà blu dell'abito ho applicato il pizzo e la passamaneria argento a festoni fermati da fiocchi di taffetà sulla gonna, sul corpetto invece ho simulato l'effetto visivo di una bertha (non necessaria visto che la scollatura non è molto profonda), creando una punta verso il basso con il pizzo, fermata sulle spalle da due piccoli fiocchi in taffetà.
Ho completato il tutto con delle scarpe blu col tacco basso a rocchetto prese agli ultimi saldi di febbraio, dei guanti da sposa anni '50 trovati in super sconto al mio negozio vintage preferito (erano molto ingialliti ma dopo un paio di ammolli nel bicarbonato son tornati come nuovi) e alcuni gioielli trovati al mercato e da Claire's.

Once I gathered all the necessary materials, I immediately started sewing: the skirt was the easiest part because I had already made a similar one for A late winter's night dream, the bodice instead put me in a little trouble: I had to baste two mock ups (made from old sheets) before being able to adjust the pattern to my measurements (I hand-drawn it from this one) and I do not think I would have succeeded without the valuable advice of some friends which are more experienced seamstresses than me.
Once I finished the "base" of the gown in blue taffeta, I draped the lace and trimmings on the skirt helding them in place with some taffeta bows, on the bodice instead I tried to recreate the visual effect of a bertha (unnecessary because the neckline is not very deep), creating a downward point with lace with two small taffeta bows on the shoulders.
I completed my outfit with a pair of blue kitten heeled shoesI bought on the last sales in February, a pair of 1950's bridal gloves from my favourite vintage shop (I got them at a bargain price because they were very yellowed but I soaked them in baking soda and now they're like new) and some bijoux from Claire's and the local market.

La foto qui sopra è l'unico ritratto che mi hanno scattato al galà (ricordate il mio innato potere di schivare i fotografi? XD), ma qualche tempo fa ho allestito un piccolo set in salotto e mi sono scattata qualche ritratto ispirato ai quadri di Ingres, questi due sono i miei scatti preferiti:

Considerando che come sarta sono ancora alle prime armi, sono molto soddisfatta del risultato finale, ci sono alcuni dettagli che andrebbero migliorati, ma sono comunque innamorata di questo abito e non vedo l'ora di rimettermi all'opera su qualche capo storico!
Inoltre, sommando il costo di tutti i materiali e accessori, sono riuscita a mantenere un budget ragionevolmente basso per un abito del genere, prima di ricomprare la macchina da cucire avevo considerato di comprarne uno già fatto, ma il "meglio" che sono riuscita a trovare erano degli obbrobri malfatti in satin scadente che si aggiravano sui 200euro, mentre per questo ho speso:

é una cifra sensibilmente più alta di quel che spendo di solito per i miei costumi, ma considerando che comprende anche la biancheria d'epoca e tutti gli accessori oltre all'abito e che l'ho "spalmata" in diverse spese più piccole nell'arco di 5 mesi, mi sembra comunque un'ottimo affare :)
Chissà quale sarà il tema del galà dell'anno prossimo? Sono curiosissima!

Considering that I'm still a beginner at sewing, I am very satisfied with the final result, there are some details that should be improved, but I'm still in love with this dress and can not wait to get back to work on some historical gown!
Moreover, totaling the cost of all materials and accessories, I have managed to keep a fairly low budget for a dress like this, before buying the new sewing machine I considered getting a premade ballgown, but the "best" I could find were some ugly satin dresses for about 200euros, while for this one I spent:

total amount = 103euros

it is a significantly higher amount than what I usually spend for my costumes, but given that it also includes underwear and accessories and that I split it into several smaller expenses in a span of 5 months, I think it's still a very good deal :)

Who knows what will be the theme of next year's gala? I'm curious!

Recensione Hennè Sahara Tazarine/ Henna Sahara Tazarine review

Dopo aver indossato abiti vittoriani, in questi giorni ho realizzato un'altro piccolo sogno: avere i capelli rossi! Fin da quando ero bambina ho sempre invidiato le chiome infuocate di Pippi Calzelunghe, Ariel e Anna di Green Gables, ma ora anch'io sono baciata dal fuoco, anzi...dall'hennè!
Era da un pò che volevo provarlo, non solo per la colorazione, ma anche per i suoi effetti benefici (pare che aiuti a proteggere i capelli e rinforzare i capelli sfibrati), così grazie anche ai consigli di Piperita Patty e di un paio di amiche più esperte nel campo, questo weekend mi sono cimentata nell'impresa.
Come hennè ho scelto la marca Sahara Tazarine in scatola gialla, che dovrebbe essere per i tatuaggi, ma va benissimo anche per i capelli (anzi, stando alle recensioni che ho letto sul web, pare che colori anche meglio della versione apposita per capelli in scatola verde) essendo polvere di Lawsonia pura senza picramati nè altre altre sostanze chimiche. Il problema con questa marca è la reperibilità: la si trova abbastanza facilmente su internet ma a prezzi decisamente alti, mentre nei negozi non è facilissima da trovare, i posti migliori dove cercarla sono i minimarket e le macellerie arabe, che la importano direttamente e la fanno pagare molto meno (una scatolina da circa 100gr l'ho pagata 2.50 euro in un negozietto a Torino, contro i 12 euro di ebay).

 After wearing Victorian clothing, these days I fulfilled another little dream: dying my hair red! Ever since I was a child I always envied the fiery hair of Pippi Longstocking, Ariel and Anne of Green Gables, but now I'm kissed by fire (well, by henna ^_^) too!I was thinking to try henna from a while, not only for the color, but also for its beneficial effects (it helps protecting and strengthen damaged hair), so thanks to the advices of Piperita Patty and a couple of friends more experienced in the field, this weekend I gathered all the supplies needed. 
I chose the henna brand Sahara Tazarine in yellow box , which is meant to be used for tattoos, but that's great also for hair dyeing (in fact, according to the reviews I read on the net, it seems that it dyes even better than the green box one which is for hair) because it's pure powder of Lawsonia without picramati nor other chemical ingredients. The problem with this brand is the availability : you can find it quite easily on the internet but at higher prices, while it's not easy to find in shops, the best places to look for are ethnic convenience stores and Arabian butcher shops, who imports it directly and charge much less (I paid €2.50 for a small 100g box in a shop in Turin, while it starts from €12 on Ebay).

Hennè Tazarine in scatola verde (preferite quella gialla se la trovate)/ green box Tazarine henna (yellow is better)

Ho preferito questa marca rispetto ad altre perchè dona riflessi più caldi e ramati, specialmente se miscelata con camomilla e curcuma.
Nonostante io sia un pò pasticciona con queste cose, sono riuscita a prepare l'impacco e ad applicarlo senza intoppi (e senza tingere di rosso tutto il bagno e Dani che mi ha dato una mano), ho miscelato la polvere con della camomilla bella forte (la curcuma non l'avevo) e 3 cucchiai di miele per addensarla un pò. Ho lasciato ossidare il composto solo una ventina di minuti, il tempo di farmi uno shampoo e preparare tutto l'occorrente per l'applicazione e l'ho tenuto in posa 2 ore (non ho fotografato queste fasi, credetemi, non volete vedermi con un  grumo di fanghiglia verde in testa XD); dopo di chè ho sciacquato bene i capelli sotto l'acqua calda corrente fino a rimuovere ogni rimasuglio di hennè secco, senza usare nè shampoo nè balsamo perchè scaricano il colore.
Una volta asciugati i capelli... meraviglia! Dal mio castano chiaro con punte bionde sono passata ad un bel castano ramato con riflessi rossi intensissimi, soprattutto sulle punte che ora sono quasi pel di carota!
 

I preferred this brand over others because it gives brighter and coppery reflections, especially if mixed with chamomile and turmeric.

Even though I'm usually a bit clumsy with these things, I was able to prepare and apply the mixture smoothly (and without dyeing red the bathroom and Dani who helped me), I mixed the powder only with strongly infused chamomile (I didn't have turmeric) and 3 tablespoons of honey to thicken it a bit. I left the compound oxidize only about twenty minutes, just the time to take a shampoo and prepare everything I needed to apply it, and I kept it on my hair for 2 hours (I don't have pictures of this step, believe me, you don't want to see me with slimy green mud on my head XD), after that I rinsed my hair thoroughly under hot running water to remove any leftover dried henna, without using neither shampoo nor conditioner because it wash off the color a bit.Once I dried my hair... what a wonder! My hair, from their natural light brown with blonde bits, turned into a beautiful coppery brown with bright red highlights, especially on the tips that are now almost little ginger!

Inoltre i capelli al tatto sembrano meno secchi di prima, magari con questo stratagemma riesco a evitare di tagliarli ancora per un pò. Sono molto soddisfatta del risultato e credo che tra qualche mese lo rifarò per vedere se con più applicazioni riesco ad arrivare ad un rosso più carico :)

Also they look less damaged and dry to the touch, maybe with this remedy I can keep them long for a little more. I'm very happy with the resulting color and I think I'll do it again in a couple of months to see if I can reach a lighter and more intense red :)

Dolls update: l'attacco dei cloni Blythe/ Attack of the Blythe Clones

L'altro giorno, con l'arrivo di un piccolo pachetto nella posta, la fine ha avuto inizio.
No, non ho ordinato un kit "Costruisciti la tua apocalisse, con piaga di rane inclusa nella confezione", perciò il mondo anche questa volta è salvo, ma il mio portafogli forse no.
Perchè quel pacchettino conteneva quello (anzi, quella) che dara inizio ad una mia nuova dipendenza da bambole: una Basaak, ovvero un clone Blythe.
Dato che una Blythe originale al momento è molto fuori dal mio budget, era già da qualche mese che meditavo di comprare un clone per provare a customizzarlo, ma ho sempre rimandato un pò per il prezzo (solitamente su Ebay i cloni Blythe si aggirano sui 30 euro), un pò perchè temevo che dal vivo quel capoccione lucido e gli occhi sgranati non mi sarebbero proprio piaciuti.
Ma, dopo molti dubbi e tentennamenti, poco prima di Natale ho deciso di farmi un piccolo autoregalo, approfittando di un nuovo rivenditore con prezzi più bassi.
Così, dopo 3 settimane di attesa, finalmente è arrivata Lucy (l'ho chiamata così da Lucy Lawless, perchè con i capelli neri, la frangetta e i chip degli occhi azzurro chiarissimo mi ricorda un pò Xena Principessa Guerriera):

The other day, with the arrival of a small package in the mail, the end has begun.
 No, I didn't bought a "Build your own apocalypse kit (with frog plague included in the box)", so the world is safe again, but my wallet may not be.
Because that little package contained what will start a new dolls addiction for me: a Basaak doll, a Blythe clone.
Since an original Blythe is way out of my current budget, it's been some months that I 'm considering buying a clone and try to customize it; but I was always unsecure because of the price ( usually Basaaks cost around 30euros/40 dollars on Ebay) and also because I feared that I would not have liked their big head and wide eyes.
But just before Chrismtas, after a lot of doubts and hesitations, I decided to make myself a little present, taking advantage of a new reseller with lower prices.
So, after 3 weeks of waiting, Lucy has finally arrived to me (I've called her Lucy after Lucy Lawless, because with her black bangs and light blue eyechips she reminds me of Xena the Warrior Princess):

Nonostante gli abiti orribili, sono rimasta piacevolmente impressionata dalla qualità della bambola: i capelli sono molto morbidi e la frangetta è tagliata piuttosto bene, il meccanismo degli occhi scatta senza problemi e non ha graffi ne macchie. Qui sotto potete vedere i colori dei quattro diversi chip occhi:

 Despite the awful clothes, I've been positively impressed by the doll's quality: her hair are soft and the bangs are cut quite nicely, the eye mechanism clicks smoothly and she has no stains nor scratches. Here you can see the different eye colours:

In un secondo momento ho notato che le ciglia dell'occhio destro e il fard sulle guance sono un pò storti, ma non è un gran problema visto che volevo comunque opacizzarla e rifarle il trucco.
Il corpo è molto simile a quello delle Skipper anni 90, ma un pò meno snodato:

 On a second look I've noticed that her cheek blush and left eye lashes are not straight, but it's not a big problem since I wanted to mattify her face and redo her makeup.
The body is very similar to 90's Skipper dolls, but a little less poseable:

...ma le gambe quasi non si piegano :-/ per ora la tengo così, ma se il trucco mi riesce bene credo che in futuro le trapianterò un corpo più snodato. 

Come dicevo prima il corpo è molto simile a quello delle vecchie Skipper, quindi sto avendo un pò di problemi a vestirla, poichè al momento ho solo abiti MH, Bratz e Hi-Glamm (quasi tutti troppo stretti o corti), appena torno dai miei darò un'occhiata tra le vecchie cose di Barbie...

 Oltre alla bambola, il venditore mi ha inviato in omaggio alcuni accessori: un abitino di ricambio (lo so, entrambi gli abiti sono decisamente bruttini, ma posso sempre cucirgliene di nuovi ;))

...but her legs are almost unbendable :-/  right now I'll keep her original body, but if I manage to give her a good face repaint, I'll probably give her a better and more articulated body.

As I said before, being her body similar to old Skipper dolls, I'm having a bit of trouble in dressing her, since I only have MH, Bratz and Hi-Glamm clothes right now (and they are almost all too tight or short), as soon as I go to my parent's, I'll try checking my old Barbie stuff...

 In addition to the doll, the seller sent me some accessories as a gift: another dress (I know, they're both quite ugly, but I can always sew her new ones ;))

Sono piuttosto soddisfatta di questo acquisto: nonostante alcuni piccoli difetti, la trovo molto carina e credo che con un minimo intervento di customizzazione (e abiti nuovi) possa diventare davvero una bella bambola!

Per quanto riguarda il trucco, mi sto ancora documentando su tecniche e materiali, ma l'altra sera, mentre guardavo il Dr Who (io e Dani stiamo in fissa col Dottore al momento XD), mi sono subito messa all'opera per crearle un abito più carino, che ve ne pare?

 I'm pretty satisfied with this purchase: despite some small flaws, I find her cute and I think that with a minimum customizing work (and new clothes) she can really be a beautiful doll!

Regarding makeup, I'm still collecting material about techniques and colours to use, but yesterday's evening, while watching Doctor Who (me and Dani are crazy for the Doctor right now XD), I put myself at work and created a cute new dress for her, what do you think?

E' un modello piuttosto semplice e veloce da realizzare, con corpetto e gonna fatti a uncinetto a punto alto e dettagli in pizzo di cotone. Al momento sto lavorando a un set invernale, sempre ad uncinetto, composto da cuffia e mantellina, rimanete sintonizzati per nuove foto ;)

 It's a quick and simple dress, with a crocheted bodice and skirt and some cortton lace details. Right now I'm working on a crocheted winter set, with matching hat and capelet, stay tuned for further pictures ;)

Un Natale...stellare!/ Star Christmas!

Tanto tempo fa (la settimana scorsa), in una galassia lontana lontana (Torino), una giovane coppia decise di decorare il proprio albero di Natale a tema Guerre Stellari. Nonostante la mancanza di tempo e le dimensioni ridotte dell'albero, riuscirono comunque a portare a termine l'impresa, giusto in tempo per Natale... (per apprezzare appieno questo post, vi suggerisco di leggerlo inclinando il monitor del pc all'indietro e scorrendo lentamente in giù la pagina XD)

A long, long time ago (last week), in a galaxy far far away (Turin), a young couple decided to decorate their Christmas tree with Star Wars ornaments. Despite the lack of time and the tiny sized tree, they reached their goal, just in time for Christmas... (to full appreciate this post I suggest you to read it with your pc monitor inclined backwards and slowly scrolling down the page XD)

Come promesso, ecco qua il nostro alberello stellare! Purtroppo, come dicevo sopra, non ho avuto molto tempo in questi giorni, quindi ho dovuto ridimensionare parecchio i progetti faraonici che avevo in mente per le decorazioni (che originariamente includevano anche wookie all'uncinetto, caschi da stormtrooper di feltro, mini spade laser fatte con i bastoncini luminosi...). Alla fine mi sono limitata a dipingere con gli acrilici otto vecchie palline che avevo già in casa, con quattro soggetti differenti:

As I promised, here's our star tree! Sadly, as I said before, I didn't had much time in these days, so I had to downsize a lot my project for the ornaments (which originally included also crocheted wookies, felted stormtrooper helmets and tiny lightsabers made with glowing sticks...). In the end I only painted with acrylic colors eight old ornaments I already had at home, in four different subjects:

Otto palline però son proprio poche così, per riempirlo ancora un pò, ho realizzato dei semplici fiocchi con del nastro argentato con motivo a stelle e, sempre dai vecchi addobbi, ho recuperato altre palline più piccole blu e un filo di perle azzuro-argentate. Per finire ho preso per pochi euro dai cinesi una catenella a stelle argentate e delle lucine sempre blu che, una volta accese, fanno un effetto a mio parere molto spaziale (che potete ammirare in tutta la sua magnifica sfocatezza qui sotto).

But only eight ornaments aren't enough so, to decorate it a bit more, I created some easy bows using a silver starry ribbon, and collected some smaller blue ball ornaments and a silvery-blu pearl string from the old decorations. To complete it I bought for a few euros in a china shop a silver stars chain and a string of tiny blue lights which, in my opinion, gave a great space impression to the tree (you can admire it in all its blurred glory in the pic below).

Un Natale in miniatura/ A miniature Christmas

Natale si avvicina e ho iniziato proprio oggi a decorare la casa, per ora ho messo solo qualche ghirlanda, ma non vedo l'ora di fare l'albero di Natale: dato che quello vecchio, oltre ad essere parecchio ingombrante, sta cominciando a perdere pezzi/rami e la base si è rotta, ho proposto a Dani di cercarne uno più piccolo (pensavo non più alto di un metro) da tenere nel nostro studio, e lui ha acconsentito a patto che lo decoriamo a tema Star Wars (non so cosa ne uscirà di questo progetto, quindi restate sintonizzati per le foto nei prossimi giorni) XD
Ma, oltre alla nostra casa scala 1:1, mi piacerebbe creare qualche piccola decorazione e oggetto d'arredo a misura di bambola per dei set natalizi con le mie MH. Fortunatamente dispongo già di un mini albero di Natale alto circa 20cm (preso al Tiger l'anno scorso), che ho usato in questa foto con Operetta:

Christmas is near and today I've started decorating the house, for now I've only hung some wreaths, but I can't wait to decorate the Christmas tree: since our old one it's very big and it's starting to fall in pieces, I suggested Dani to buy a new smaller one to display in our studio, and he agreed, provided that we decorate it following a Star Wars theme (I don't know what will come out of this project, so stay tuned for pictures in the next days) XD.
But, besides our 1:1 scaled house, I would like to create some tiny decorations and furnishing for my dolls, to create some Christmas themed MH photoshoots. Luckily I already have a small Christmas tree (about 20cm high, bought at Tiger last year), that I already used in this picture with Operetta:

Quest'anno mi piacerebbe proprio creare un diorama a tema natalizio con pacchi regalo, ghirlande e dolci festivi!

Apettando Natale 2013

Domani, sarò presente con le mie creazioni in Fimo al mercatino "Aspettando Natale" che si terrà per le vie del centro di Carignano (TO), se siete in zona passate a salutarmi :D (e non fatevi spaventare dalla neve leggera di oggi, domani le previsioni danno sole tutto il giorno ;)).

Costumi larp economici/ Larp costumes on a budget

Recentemente mi è capitato diverse volte di parlare di giochi di ruolo dal vivo (noti anche come gdr live, o larp in inglese) con amici totalmente estranei a tale ambiente, e ho notato che molti di loro sono incuriositi e vorrebbero prima o poi provarne uno, ma ciò che più li preoccupa e li trattiene dal farlo è il costo elevato dei costumi.
Ora, io non mi considero una grandissima esperta nel campo, ma con un anno e mezzo di gioco in varie associazioni e quattro personaggi diversi alle spalle, credo di aver imparato almeno qualche trucchetto del mestiere per la realizzazione di un costume, perciò ho deciso di scrivere questa mini guida per aiutare gli aspiranti larpers poveri in canna come me XD (sto valutando se iniziare da qui una nuova rubrica dedicata al mondo larp e alla creazione di costumi e oggetti di scena, vi piacerebbe?), oggi in particolare parlerò di come mettere insieme un buon costume femminile in stile fantasy/medioevale con un budget ridotto.

Recently I talked about live action role-playing games (also known as LARP) with some friends of mine who are totally unrelated to that "world", and I noticed that many of them are curious about it and would like to try sooner or later , but their biggest worry that stops them from doing so is the high cost of the costumes .Now, I do not consider myself a great expert in this field , but after a year and a half of playing in various associations and four different characters, I think I've learned at least a few tricks for the creation of a costume, so I decided to write this  short guide to help penniless aspiring LARPers like me XD (I'm considering to start a new section here, dedicated to the creation of LARP costumes and props , would you be interested in reading it?) , today in particular, I will discuss how put together a good fantasy/medieval female costume on a budget.

 Per esempio, nella foto sgranata qui sopra (sto ancora aspettando quelle scattate dal fotografo ufficiale dell'evento ^_^) potete vedere il mio nuovo pg di Bollaverde, Zafirah Al-Nayyr, nobile fahariana; il costume l'ho creato in una decina di giorni con un budget ridottissimo:
Abito, pantaloni: mercatino dell'usato;
"Sari" (in realtà è un pareo), cintura borchiata, spada e bracciali in cuoio: prestati da amici e parenti;
Bracciale a serpente, cintura bianca con monetine: mercato di Porta Palazzo, Torino;
Diadema con velo: fatto da me, in realtà è una collana modificata con attaccato un rettangolo di stoffa ricavato da una tendina XD

For example, in the grainy pic above (I'm still waiting for the official photo set of the event) you can see my new character for Bollaverde LARP, Zafirah Al-Nayyr, Faharian noblewoman; I created this costume in about 10 days with a very low bodget:
Dress, pants: flea market;
"Sari" (actually it's a beach sarong), studded belt, sword and leather cuffs: borrowed from friends and relatives;
Snake bracelet, white coin belt: Porta Palazzo market, Turin;
Headpiece ith veil: handmade by me, actually it's a modified necklace with a piece of curtain fabric attached XD

La prima cosa da fare una volta scelto il personaggio che volete interpretare, è cercare di immaginare come si veste, tenendo anche conto delle sue abilità e mansioni: se siete una nobildonna di alto lignaggio potete andarci giù pesante con gioielli e tessuti raffinati, mentre se siete una guerriera errante forse è meglio preferire abiti più comodi e sobri.
Una volta deciso quale sarà più o meno il vostro look, il primo passo è quello di cercare "pezzi" utili fra ciò che avete già in casa, oppure chiedere ad amici e parenti se possono prestarvi qualcosa: anche oggetti e abiti comunissimi possono tornare utili con qualche piccola modifica.
Se dopo questa fase avrete ancora bisogno di qualcosa, le due vie più economiche sono i mercatini dell'usato e il fai da tè. Se sapete cucire siete già a metà dell'opera, poichè vi basta trovare scampoli di stoffa economici, oppure riutilizzare in modo creativo tende e lenzuola trovate in casa, per creare l'abito dei vostri sogni; se invece il cucito non fa per voi c'è sempre la via dell'usato: la varietà di abiti e oggetti di cui la gente vuole disfarsi per pochi euro è incredibile e con un pò di fortuna troverete sicuramente qualcosa di utile.
Nel caso non riusciste proprio a trovare tutto ciò che vi serve, oltre al classico ebay, ci sono molti siti specializzati in abbigliamento e attrezzature varie da larp, però c'è il forte rischio di superare il vostro budget, oppure che il vostro ordine non arrivi in tempo. In ogni caso se proprio dovete servirvi del web, vi consiglio Mytholon che ha un buon rapporto qualità/prezzo e spedisce piuttosto rapidamente.

Queste erano alcune linee guida generiche per procurarsi abiti e accessori a buon prezzo, ora vorrei parlare di alcuni capi che, secondo la mia esperienza, sono assolutamente necessari per ogni tipo di costume:

- Stivali. Durante gli eventi larp ci si muove molto, si cammina, corre, combatte, dunque è fondamentale avere delle calzature comode che non provochino vesciche e vi tengano i piedi caldi in inverno. L'ideale sarebbe un bel paio di stivali impermeabili e con suola antiscivolo; mi sento di consigliarli anche d'estate perchè pur tenendo molto caldo, gli stivali permettono di camminare su ogni tipo di terreno senza scivolare o graffiarsi con la vegetazione.
Fortunatamente non è difficile (soprattutto per noi ragazze) trovare dei modelli, anche economici, che si adattino a costumi storici o fantasy, in linea di massima il classico stivale con risvolto "piratesco" va bene con quasi tutto, qui sotto potete vederne alcuni esempi:

The first thing to do once you've choosen the character you want to play , is trying to imagine how she dresses, also considering her skills and tasks : if you are a noble lady you can  use a lot of jewelry and fine fabrics, while if you are a wandering warrior perhaps it is better to prefer more comfortable and sober clothes.Once you have decided what will be, more or less, your look , the first step is to look for useful items among what you already have at home, or ask friends and relatives if they can lend you something : even the commonest objects and clothes can come in handy with some minor modifications .After this step, if you still need something , the cheapest ways are flea markets and DIY . If you can sew, you're halfway done, as you just have to find cheap fabric scraps, or reuse in a creative way curtains and bed sheets found in the house, to create the dress of your dreams; instead if sewing is not for you, you can check flea markets and charity shops: the variety of clothes and objects that people wants to get rid of for a few euros is amazing and with a little luck you will surely find something useful.If you still haven't found everything you need, in addition to ebay , there are many websites specialized  in LARP clothing and equipment, though there is the risk of exceeding your budget, or that your order does not arrive on time. Anyway if you have to shop online, I recommend you Mytholon that has a good quality/price ratio and ships rather quickly.

These were just some general guidelines to find clothes and accessories at a good price, now I want to talk about some items which, in my experience, are absolutely necessary for every kind of costume :- Boots. During LARP events you move a lot:  you walk, run, fight... so it's very  important to have comfortable shoes that don't cause blisters and keep your feet warm in winter. The ideal would be a nice pair of waterproof boots with non-slip soles, they're the best even in summer because they allow you to walk on any terrain without slipping or scratching your leg with vegetation .Fortunately it is not difficult (especially for us girls ) to find cheap boots, that could fit with historical or fantasy costumes: for example the classic "pirate" boot with a cuff or fold on the upper part goes well with almost everything. Below you can see some examples :

- Mantello. Altro capo fondamentale in qualsiasi stagione (l'ho usato anche ad agosto, giuro) è un buon mantello con cappuccio, fatto con una stoffa calda e semi impermeabile (tessuti naturali come lana, lana cotta, loden o qualcosa del genere sono l'ideale, per favore evitate come la peste cose come viscosa, raso e simili). Sui internet se ne trovano di diversi stili, colori e materiali, ma se volete risparmiare il modo migliore è cucirlo da sè: il mantello a mezza ruota è un capo facilissimo e veloce da realizzare anche per chi non si intende troppo di cucito (come me ^^), potete utilizzare uno dei numerosi tutorial che si trovano sul web come questo.

- Borsa/scarsella. Durante gli eventi non è possibile tornare alla macchina o alla tenda ogni cinque minuti per recuperare cellulare/soldi/fazzoletti/torcia/etc... perciò è bene avere sempre con sè un piccolo contenitore per portare sia gli oggetti di gioco, che i vostri averi nel mondo reale. In termini di comodità l'ideale è una scarsella da attaccare alla cintura, ma anche una tracolla o uno zainetto possono andare. Come materiali vale sempre la regola dei tessuti naturali: tela, cuoio o pelle vanno benissimo. Ecco qualche esempio di borse e zaini adattabili ad un costume larp:

- Cloak. Another fundamental item in any season (I used it even in August, really) is a good hooded cloak , made ​​with a warm semi waterproof fabric (natural materials such as wool, felt, loden or something similar are the best, please avoid things like viscose, satin, etc.) . On the net you can find cloak in a lot of different styles, colors and materials, but if you want to save some moneyit is better to sew one yourself: an half circle cloak is very easy and quick to sew, even for beginner seamstresses (like me ^ ^), you can use one of the many online tutorials like this. 
- Bag/belt pouch. During an event, you can not return to the car or the tent every five minutes to recover your phone/money/handkerchief/torch/etc... so it is good to keep always with you a small container to bring both game objects and your real world belongings. In terms of  comfort, the ideal is a pouch attached to your belt, but also a shoulder bag or a backpack can go. Follow again the rule of natural materials: canvas, leather or suede should be fine. Here are some examples of bags and backpacks suitable for a LARP costume:

Una volta trovati questi tre capi fondamentali, il resto del costume sta alla vostra fantasia, come dicevo prima, è possibile mettere assieme un buon costume anche utilizzando capi di facile reperibilità come negli esempi qui sotto: con Polyvore mi sono divertita a creare due costumi completi utilizzando quasi esclusivamente abiti e accessori "normali" (ad eccezione del mantello e del diadema), che ve ne pare?

Once you have gathered these three "key" items, the rest of the costume is up to your imagination, as I said before, with a little effort you can put together a good costume using only items that are easy to find, as in the examples below: I had fun with Polyvore in creating two complete costumes using almost only "normal" clothes and accessories (except for the ncloak and tiara), what do you think?

Per quanto riguarda le armi, se è il vostro primo larp vi consiglio caldamente di farvi prestare qualcosa da un amico o noleggiarle (molte associazioni offrono questo servizio a prezzi di solito molto bassi), creare un'arma da larp non è difficilissimo ma richiede un pò di pratica, tempo e, soprattutto, diversi materiali non sempre economici, quindi prima di mettervi all'opera, è meglio aspettare e vedere se questo fantastico mondo vi piace e intendete continuare :)

Regarding weapons, if it is your first LARP event, I strongly suggest you borrow something from a friend or rent them (many associations usually offer this service for very low prices), creating LARP weapons is not difficult, but requires a little practice, time and, above all, various materials that are not always cheap so, before you start, it is better to wait and see if you like this amazing world and intend to continue :)

Dolls update: una Blythe recuperata/ Dolls update: a salvaged Blythe

Qualche tempo fa sono andata con gli amici al Balon, il famoso mercato delle pulci di Torino (se capitate in città di sabato o domenica mattina vi consiglio di farci un giro, ne vale davvero la pena) e, mentre giravo tra i vari banchi qualcosa ha attirato la mia attenzione...
Uno degli espositori aveva uno scatolone pieno di piccole cianfrusaglie e per 1 euro se ne potevano scegliere 5. Ed è proprio in mezzo a quel mare di sorpresine Kinder, cristalli di lampadario e piccoli soprammobili che ho visto spuntare la faccina con gli occhioni sgranati di una Blythe Littlest Pet Shop!

A while ago I went with my friends to the Balon, the biggest and most famous flea market of Turin (if you happen to be in town on a Saturday or Sunday morning, I recommend you to go see it, it is really worth a visit) and, as I walked among the various selling stands, something caught my attention ...
One of the exhibitors had a box full of little odds and ends and for 1 euros you could choose 5 of them. And it is in the midst of this sea of ​​Kinder surprises, crystal chandelier drops and small trinkets that I saw the smiley face with adorable eyes of a Blythe Littlest Pet Shop!

Era la bambola contenuta nel set deluxe "Bunny Duo", ancora in buone condizioni (ma credo sia stata giocata parecchio perché le giunture sono abbastanza molli), senza accessori ma con almeno il suo vestitino originale.

Ho rovistato un pò nello scatolone per vedere se riuscivo a trovare qualche altro accessorio del set, ma non ho avuto fortuna: alla fine ho scelto altri 4 oggettini per completare l'offerta e me la sono portata a casa. Per la cronaca gli altri "prescelti" sono stati 2 Kombattini (su nostalgica richiesta di Dani), un bicchierino da sakè verde e rosa che diventerà un vaso da fiori per Monster High e una piccola anfora di legno dipinta malissimo, che con una mano di acrilici diventerà un altro soprammobile taglia MH.

Come dicevo sopra la bambolina non aveva macchie né difetti (a parte dei capelli piuttosto punk che non sono riuscita a domare del tutto nemmeno lavandoli...) però era scalza e senza cappello coniglioso, così per non farla sfigurare rispetto alle altre mini Blythe della mia collezione, mi sono subito data da fare per rimediare. Ho escluso subito la ricerca dei suoi accessori originali sul web perché hanno prezzi assurdi (seriamente, 6 euro per le scarpine e 14 per il piedistallo, ma siamo matti?!?) e ho deciso di cucire io il cappellino con del feltro che avevo in casa e cercarle delle scarpine Polly Pocket (la nuova Polly con i vestiti gommosi, non quella anni novanta con le mini casette) che calzano quasi perfettamente anche alle Blythe LPS e Petite (2 euro 4 paia di scarpe, non c'è paragone sul prezzo).

Ed ecco il risultato finale:

It was the doll contained in the deluxe set "Bunny Duo" , still in good condition ( but I think it was played a lot because her joints are quite soft ), without accessories but at least with the original dress.

I searched in the box for her accessories, but I had no luck : in the end I chose 4 other trinkets to complete the offer and I brought her home. Just for the record, the other "chosen ones" were 2 Kombattini (Army Ants)(nostalgically requested by Dani), a green and pink sake glass which will become a flower pot for Monster High and a very badly painted small amphora that, once repainted, will become another MH home decor.

As I said above the doll had no stains or flaws (apart from slightly punkish hair, that not even a shower could tame completely...), however she was barefoot and without her bunny hat, so to make her look pretty as the other little Blythes of my collection, I tried to fix this problem with a bit of creativity and craftiness. 

I immediately discarded the idea of searching her original accessories on the net, because they have absurd prices (seriously , 6 euro for the shoes and 14 for the pedestal, are we crazy?!?), and I decided to sew the hat with some white felt I had at home and look for some Polly Pocket shoes (the new Polly with gummy clothes, not the original 90's one) that fit almost perfectly to LPS and Petite Blythes (4 pairs of shoes for just 2€ , there is no comparison on the price ).

And here's the final result:

Non sono completamente soddisfatta del cappellino perché il feltro essendo rigido gli dà una forma un pò strana, ma considerando che è la prima volta che lavoro su un pezzo così piccolo non è uscito poi così male.

I'm not completely satisfied with the hat because the stiffness of the felt give it an odd shape, but considering it's the first time I work on a piece so small, it did not come out so bad.

Ecco invece le scarpine di Polly Pocket, oltre a queste ho recuperato anche un paio di anfibi neri e due paia di sandali, uno arancione e uno rosa glitterato. Queste sono quelle che si intonavano di più al vestitino, peccato che i dettagli argento siano un pò sbavati (però contate anche che queste foto le ho fatte con un obiettivo macro, a occhio nudo si nota molto meno ^_^).

Here we have the Polly Pocket shoes, in addition to these I also got a pair of black combat boots and two pairs of sandals, one in orange and one in pink with glitter. These green sneakers were the best match for her dress, too bad that the silver details are a bit smudged (however consider that these photos were taken with a macro lens, to the naked eye it is less noticeable ^_^).

In conclusione sono decisamente soddisfatta di questo acquisto e mi sono pure divertita a cercare e creare degli accessori alternativi!

In the end I'm very satisfied of this purchase and I also had fun searching and sewing some alternative accessories!
